Quote of the Week
“For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete, gifted with the extension of senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings, they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time.”
Henry Beston The Outermost House
– Thank you for being here! I mean that sincerely!
Thank you for taking time from your already busy life to read what I believe will make you a better handler, owner, companion, fellow traveler… you choose the terminology you like to describe your dog/human relationship. I will usually use the word handler but in your mind just substitute the relationship word you like.
For better or worse, you are a dog trainer.
If you are interacting with a dog, Saint Bernard to Chihuahua and every breed in between, you are training, un-trainig or even worse teaching or rewarding bad habits.
How ever you describe you relationship, you must be the leader. Not in some Alpha dog way but in a way that offers our dogs direction because we have asked them to live in our world and teaching them to be good citizens, keeping them, and other people safe is our responsibility.
Honestly this is going to be the most fun you will ever have with your dog. By this I mean training. Training for many people seems like something difficult… so forget the word and use playing instead. I like to use the word playing with the dog and people who know me understand I’m training my dog, but, it is playing and it is fun so training or playing mean the same thing to me. My dog and I are having a good time together and we are also keeping the obedience training sharp in the process. My dog Cowboy is a really good nose work dog. Very good at tracking people and will eventually be certified as a cadaver dog.
I’m not going to wear you out with this either, so let’s call this length of writing enough to communicate to each other, and hopefully we can help good dogs and their handler/moms/dads… build on the wonderful relationship I’m sure you already have.
